Media Release:
Awk Wah is the solo guise of drummer/percussionist Shark Fung (Amino Acid Orchestra, I\D, Engineered Beautiful Blood). Over the course of 9 tracks totaling 37 minutes, he overlays a variety of skitters, clatters and scrapes over twitchy, spidery rhythms. This is Noise, not as tidal overwhelming or pulsating drift, but as wide-eyed wonder/wander at each rupture/disjunct.
Reviews:
“[...] a nice metallic surprise from Singapore, slipped inside a pink envelope – perhaps this is the traditional Asian way of expressing a friendly greeting to a music lover. Little friendliness found in the contents when I popped open this DVD slim box, though [...] an overall texture of unpleasant grittiness, metallic scrape and unpatterned rhythms that succeeds perfectly for me; it conveys a real sense of defeat and claustrophobia, like a bound man sewed up in a mailsack trying to wriggle free with nothing more than a small nail file to make his escape. ‘It seems as real as now,’ is the metaphysical utterance printed on the back.” – Ed Pinsent, The Sound Projector
“[...] a solid collection of some rhythm-based weirdness, sure filled with drums, but mostly sounds of scraping and chattering noises as if he sent a contact mic down the bug filled secret passage from Temple of Doom. Maybe somewhere between a more nuanced Black Pus and the drum heavy Merzbow albums [...]” – Andrew Murdock Livingston, Foxy Digitalis
